NY STATE RESTRICTS AI IN HIRING

Today, on July 5th, the state of New York is restricting artificial intelligence in hiring. Now employers must notify job applicants of when they are using AI and how. We've broken down the new restriction here.

NYC WILL ENFORCE AI RESTRICTIONS JULY 5TH

"New York City’s law requiring employers to audit and notify candidates about the use of automated employment decision tools will be enforced beginning July 5, the city’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection announced in an update as part of the publication of a final rule implementing Local Law 144. The law is part of a series of AI-related developments affecting HR departments. DCWP proposed its first version of the rule in September and revised the rule in December following a public hearing in November. A second public hearing in January yielded comments that DCWP said led to changes in the final rule." Learn more

THE FIRST CITY-BASED AI LAW

"Employers in New York City will face new regulations on using artificial intelligence in hiring decisions starting this week. The city will begin enforcing Local Law 144 on Wednesday, a law banning employers from using automated employment decision tools unless the technology is audited annually for bias and they inform applicants of the screening tool. The law will be the first city-based AI restriction enacted within the United States and could set the standards for how other cities and states set guardrails for the practice. The technology is fairly common, according to some local lawyers." Learn more
