CDC Changes Covid Guidelines

On Friday, the CDC announced that they were changing the Covid-19 isolation policy guidelines. We are breaking down the new guidelines and here and looking into what people think about the new rules.

CDC DROPS 5 DAY COVID ISOLATION

"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is dropping its 5-day isolation guidance for people with COVID-19. The agency made the announcement on Friday, following reports last month that the policy change was in the works. Until now, people who tested positive were advised to stay home for at least five days to reduce the chances of spreading the coronavirus to others. Now, the CDC is replacing that with general guidance for anyone who's feverish, sneezing and coughing with a respiratory virus.

The gist? "When you get sick, stay home and away from others," says CDC director Dr. Mandy Cohen. Learn more

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU

"It’s a reasonable move,” said Aaron Glatt, an infectious disease doctor and hospital epidemiologist at Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital on Long Island. “When you’re doing public health, you have to look at what is going to be listened to, and what is doable.”

Guidelines that adhere to the highest standards of infection control might please purists in public health who don’t have to make policies for the real world. However, guidelines that seem to acknowledge that workers often don’t have paid sick leave and emergency child care, and that social interactions are important to folks, are more likely not only to be followed but to engender trust in public health authorities." Learn more

PEOPLE HAVE MIXED REACTIONS TO CHANGE IN GUIDELINES

"Effective Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is no longer telling people to stay home from work and school for five days if they have COVID-19.

It comes as it's been four years since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, but it still feels too soon for some. Patsy Hansford and Ed Laski spend most of every day working together at their antique shop in Romeo. Like many, their opinions of the CDC dropping the five-day isolation guidelines couldn't be more different. "I believe it to be a good thing. What do you think?" Laski asked Hansford. Learn more
